Why Kerala Businesses Are Investing in Commercial Solar Power

For many businesses, electricity is a recurring operating expense that increases as production, cooling, refrigeration, lighting and equipment use grow.

A correctly sized commercial rooftop solar system generates electricity at the same premises where it is consumed. Businesses with substantial daytime electricity demand can therefore reduce the amount of energy they purchase from the grid during solar-generation hours.

Actual savings depend on your tariff category, energy-consumption profile, solar-system capacity, generation, self-consumption and applicable KSEB/KSERC billing rules.

Reduce Daytime Electricity Costs

Commercial properties often consume a large portion of their electricity during daylight hours. A properly designed solar system can directly supply part of this requirement, reducing grid imports while solar generation is available.

The amount saved varies according to:
  • Electricity tariff
  • Daytime consumption
  • Solar-system capacity
  • Roof conditions
  • Solar generation
  • Metering arrangement
  • Business operating schedule

Improve Long-Term Energy Cost Visibility

A solar system requires upfront capital investment but does not require fuel to generate electricity.

This can help businesses reduce exposure to a portion of future grid-electricity costs, although tariffs and regulatory conditions can change over the life of the system.

Use Available Commercial Rooftop Space

Warehouses, factories, hospitals, schools, hotels and office buildings often have substantial unused roof area.

A commercial rooftop solar project turns suitable roof space into an electricity-generating business asset without requiring additional land.

Tax & Depreciation Considerations

Solar power-generating systems may qualify for depreciation benefits under the applicable income-tax rules.

The tax impact depends on the business entity, ownership model, applicable tax regime, date the asset is placed in service and other conditions.

FGE Solar can provide the project cost and technical documentation required for your financial evaluation, but businesses should confirm depreciation and tax treatment with their chartered accountant or tax adviser.

ESG & Sustainability Objectives

Commercial solar can contribute to an organisation's renewable-energy and emissions-reduction strategy by increasing the share of electricity generated from a renewable source.

Where sustainability reporting is required, generation data from the solar monitoring system can support internal energy reporting.

Lower Grid Dependence During Solar Hours

Solar cannot eliminate every electricity charge or guarantee complete energy independence.

However, it can reduce the amount of electricity imported from the grid during generation hours when matched correctly with the property's load profile.

Commercial Solar for Every Business Type

FGE Solar designs commercial solar solutions around each property's electricity demand, roof availability and business operations.

Factories & Manufacturing Units

Manufacturing facilities with strong daytime equipment loads can be well suited to commercial solar power. A detailed load profile helps determine how much solar generation can be consumed directly within the facility and what system capacity is technically and financially appropriate.

Warehouses & Logistics Facilities

Warehouses often combine large rooftop areas with lighting, ventilation, office equipment and material-handling loads. A commercial rooftop solar system can make productive use of otherwise unused roof space.

Hospitals & Clinics

Hospitals and healthcare facilities operate significant electrical equipment, HVAC, lighting and support systems. Solar can reduce a portion of daytime grid consumption, while critical backup requirements must continue to be designed separately through the appropriate backup infrastructure.

Schools, Colleges & Educational Institutions

Educational campuses commonly have strong daytime electricity consumption for classrooms, laboratories, offices, cooling and other facilities. Solar can help institutions reduce their long-term electricity operating costs.

Hotels & Resorts

Hotels use electricity for air conditioning, kitchens, water heating, refrigeration, lighting and guest facilities. Commercial solar can offset part of these daytime loads when the available rooftop area and load profile are suitable.

Offices & Commercial Buildings

Corporate offices, business centres and commercial buildings commonly operate during the same hours that rooftop solar is generating electricity. This can create a strong self-consumption profile for solar for commercial buildings.

Supermarkets & Retail Stores

Retail outlets use electricity for refrigeration, cooling, lighting, displays and other equipment throughout the day. A properly sized commercial solar system can reduce part of this recurring grid consumption.

Agricultural & Agro-Processing Businesses

Cold storage, processing, pumping and packaging operations can have substantial electricity requirements. The right solar configuration depends on the consumer category, load pattern, applicable scheme and grid rules.

Religious & Charitable Institutions

Churches, temples, mosques, charitable organisations and community institutions can assess rooftop solar where electricity consumption and suitable roof area justify the investment. Any grant, CSR funding or incentive should be confirmed specifically for the institution before being included in the financial model.

Commercial Solar Panel Cost in Kerala

The commercial solar panel cost cannot be accurately determined from system capacity alone.

Two 100 kW projects can have different investment costs depending on the property, engineering requirements and selected equipment.

Factors affecting commercial solar installation cost include:

Commercial solar cost in Kerala: price by system size

Commercial solar in Kerala costs about ₹40,000 to ₹55,000 per kW before GST for larger plants, so a 50 kW system comes to roughly ₹20 to ₹27.5 lakh. Larger systems cost less per kW. Smaller plants can sit above this band. The final price depends on your roof, the panel and inverter brands, and how much electrical work the site needs.

What Is Included in a Commercial Solar Power System?

A complete commercial solar power system engineered for Kerala conditions includes more than solar panels.

Commercial Solar Panels

Solar PV modules convert sunlight into DC electricity.

Panel selection should consider:

  • Efficiency
  • Module wattage
  • Technology
  • Temperature characteristics
  • Available roof area
  • Manufacturer warranty
  • Performance warranty
  • Service support

Solar Inverters

Inverters convert the DC power generated by the solar panels into AC electricity suitable for use within the facility.

Commercial systems may use one or multiple inverters depending on system capacity, roof layout and electrical design.

Mounting Structure

The mounting structure secures the panels to the roof or ground.

Commercial design must consider:

  • Roof construction
  • Wind load
  • Structural capacity
  • Drainage
  • Access
  • Maintenance
  • Corrosion environment

Electrical Protection

Appropriate AC/DC protection, earthing, isolators and other safety equipment form an essential part of professional commercial solar power installation.

Solar Monitoring System

Monitoring allows facilities teams to track:

  • Energy generation
  • System availability
  • Inverter status
  • Historical output
  • Performance issues

Optional Energy Storage

Battery storage may be included where required by regulation or where the business has a specific operational need.

Battery sizing should be based on the actual objective rather than automatically added to every commercial project.

Commercial vs industrial solar: what is different

Commercial solar usually means shops, offices, hospitals and hotels on an LT connection, typically 10 kW to 100 kW. An industrial solar power plant in Kerala is usually for factories and HT consumers, often 100 kW to 1 MW, and needs more planning on the grid side.

Connection

Commercial sites are mostly LT. Large industries are often HT, with a contract demand that limits plant size.

Roof

Commercial buildings often have RCC slabs. Industries usually have metal sheet sheds, which need rail or clamp mounting that does not cause leaks.

Grid integration

LT systems connect at the main panel. HT systems connect on the transformer side with extra protection.

Approvals

Larger and HT systems may also need Electrical Inspectorate approval, in addition to KSEB. Factories need the final connection planned around production; we schedule it on a holiday or off-shift.

Payment options: purchase, loan, PPA and tax benefits

Most Kerala businesses buy their solar plant outright or with a bank loan, and claim 40% accelerated depreciation on it. Please confirm the tax treatment with your CA.

Outright purchase

You pay upfront and own the plant. This gives the best long-term return and lets you claim depreciation.

Bank loan or EMI

Many banks offer loans for business rooftop solar. In many cases the EMI is close to what you save each month, so the system largely pays for itself. We share the papers your bank needs.

PPA (pay per unit)

A developer installs and owns the plant on your roof, and you buy the power at a fixed rate below your KSEB tariff. This suits larger sites, usually 100 kW and above, with long contracts.

Tax and GST

Owners can claim 40% accelerated depreciation. If the plant runs for less than 180 days in its first year, the claim for that year is half. GST on solar equipment was cut from 12% to 5% from 22 September 2025, which lowered the cost of complete systems. Your quote from FGE shows GST separately. See our GST on solar panels guide. PM Surya Ghar subsidy is only for homes. It does not apply to commercial or industrial solar.

KSEB Grid Connectivity for Commercial Solar in Kerala

Commercial and industrial grid treatment should not be described as identical.

Under the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission's 2025 Renewable Energy and Related Matters Regulations, eligible industrial consumers may opt for net metering for renewable-energy systems from 1 kW up to 500 kW, subject to the specified conditions.

The regulations also make net billing available to all consumers/prosumers, subject to capacity and other conditions.

The appropriate arrangement for a particular business depends on:
  • Consumer category
  • System capacity
  • Connected load or contract demand
  • Storage requirements
  • Utility feasibility
  • Applicable KSERC rules

Net metering: units you export are set off against units you import, so surplus power reduces your bill one for one.

Net billing: exported units are credited at a set rate, which is usually lower than your tariff. This is why using solar power on site gives the best savings.

Source: Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Renewable Energy and Related Matters Regulations, 2025. FGE prepares and files the full KSEB application for you. Read our guide to KSEB net metering.

For this reason, FGE Solar reviews the customer's electricity connection and proposed system before recommending the grid configuration.

Commercial solar in Kerala’s climate: monsoon and coastal sites

Solar panels in Kerala keep working through the monsoon, but output drops on heavy-rain days. That is why we plan your savings on a full-year average, not on a sunny month. Read how monsoon weather changes generation.

Monsoon

June to August is the low season. The rain also washes the panels, and generation recovers quickly afterwards.

Coastal sites

Salt in the air corrodes ordinary steel. Near the coast we use hot-dip galvanised or aluminium structures and stainless steel fasteners. See coastal corrosion checks.

Wind

Structures are designed for local wind speeds, which matters on tall and exposed roofs.

Cleaning

Every 2 to 4 weeks in the dry months, and more often near busy roads or dusty industrial areas. AMC plans cover this after handover.

Frequently Asked Questions About Commercial Solar

How much does commercial solar cost in Kerala?
Larger commercial plants in Kerala typically land between ₹40,000 and ₹55,000 per kW before GST, so a 50 kW system is roughly ₹20 to ₹27.5 lakh. The final price depends on your roof, equipment brands and electrical work, and we confirm it after a free site survey.
What size solar system does my business need?
Each 1 kW makes about 120 units a month in Kerala. Divide your average monthly daytime units by 120 to get a starting size. A business using 6,000 daytime units a month would need about 50 kW. We fine-tune this from your KSEB bills and roof space.
What is the payback period for commercial solar?
Most well-sized commercial systems in Kerala pay back in about 3 to 5 years. Our published 25 kW Ernakulam warehouse system pays back in 3.2 years. Payback is fastest when you use most of the solar power on site during the day.
How much does a 100 kW solar plant cost in Kerala?
A 100 kW plant in the ₹40,000 to ₹55,000 per kW band costs about ₹40 to ₹55 lakh before GST. It produces around 12,000 units a month and needs about 10,000 sq ft of shade-free roof. Bigger plants cost less per kW than smaller ones. The quote is confirmed after survey.
How much roof area does a 50 kW or 100 kW system need?
About 5,000 sq ft for 50 kW and 10,000 sq ft for 100 kW, based on roughly 100 sq ft per kW of shade-free roof. Metal sheet roofs can often fit a little more, since the panels can sit closer to the roof.
How many units does a 100 kW solar plant generate per day in Kerala?
About 350 to 450 units on a typical sunny day, and less on heavy-rain days. Over a full year, that adds up to roughly 1.3 to 1.45 lakh units.
Can we claim accelerated depreciation on commercial solar?
Yes. A business that owns its solar plant can claim 40% accelerated depreciation under income tax rules. If the plant runs for less than 180 days in its first year, the claim for that year is half. Please confirm with your CA.
Is a loan or EMI available for commercial solar in Kerala?
Yes. Most banks offer loans for business rooftop solar, and the EMI is often close to the monthly savings. We share the documents your bank needs.
Can solar be installed without stopping production or patient care?
Yes. Most of the work happens on the roof, and the final connection needs a short shutdown, which we plan on a holiday or off-shift. Trust Health Care in Trivandrum stayed open throughout its installation.
How does the monsoon affect commercial solar generation in Kerala?
June to August is the low season, with lower output on heavy-rain days. The system still works, the rain helps keep the panels clean, and we size your plant on the full-year total so the payback figure stays realistic.
Is PM Surya Ghar subsidy available for commercial solar?
No. PM Surya Ghar covers homes only. Businesses benefit instead from 40% accelerated depreciation and lower GST on solar equipment.
Does FGE handle KSEB approval and maintenance?
Yes. We prepare and file the full KSEB application, coordinate the inspection and metering, and offer AMC plans for cleaning, inspections and generation checks after handover.
